STEM Goes Red

Inspiring the Next Generation of Women in STEM

Preparing the next generation of female scientists, doctors, engineers and innovators is essential if we want to advance health and well-being for everyone. In New York City, the American Heart Association’s STEM Goes Red initiative is helping make that future possible.

Through STEM Goes Red, young women from New York City high schools are introduced to the exciting world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Drawing on the American Heart Association’s legacy of science, education and discovery, the program offers immersive learning experiences, mentorship from industry professionals and exposure to STEM careers students may never have imagined.

The Challenge

Innovation in science and technology is shaping the future of our economy and our health, yet women remain significantly underrepresented in these fields. Women make up nearly half of the workforce, but only about 29% of the STEM workforce, and representation drops even further in leadership, where women hold only 18% of VP-level STEM roles and about 12% of C-suite positions. These gaps are even more pronounced for women of color, limiting representation in the industries shaping our future.

Why Women in STEM Matter

When young women pursue careers in STEM, we all benefit. Diverse perspectives lead to stronger innovation and better health outcomes. This is particularly important as cardiovascular disease remains the No. 1 killer of women, yet women have historically been underrepresented in medical research and the healthcare workforce. By inspiring more young women — particularly those from diverse backgrounds — to pursue STEM and healthcare careers, we can help create a healthier and more equitable future.

Creating Change Together in New York City

The classrooms of New York City are filled with bright young women whose potential is waiting to be unlocked. With the support of local sponsors, schools and volunteers, STEM Goes Red is helping New York City students discover their potential and imagine themselves as tomorrow’s scientists, doctors, engineers and changemakers. Your support helps ensure they have the mentorship, exposure and opportunities needed to pursue STEM careers — and shape the future for generations to come.
