Two weeks ago my 23 year old brother and best friend was diagnosed with final stage cancer. I'm his big brother, and so naturally, my life has been turned upside down.

Eren, my brother with cancer is on the left in the picture there next to my other brothers.

Before any of this happened, I had been heavily involved with the American Heart Association. In fact, I will be chairing the Young Professionals largest fundraiser of the year this Wednesday, exactly two Wednesdays after my brother was diagnosed. This could have been any disease and could have happened to anyone, and so even though cancer, not heart disease, is what my brother suffers from, I remain committed to the AHA. I hope you can join me by donating to the AHA for my event on Wednesday night at the Highline ballroom. It is a great organization that provides research funding and prevention/awareness dollars to help families not go through what we are going through.

I joined the AHA because of the randomness of these diseases. Unfortunately the randomness included my brother this time. It could have been a heart attack or stroke, but it was cancer. It could have been your friend or family member, but this time it was mine. And that's okay. Perhaps we can help save someone we don't know, in twenty years. My brother may be saved by research done in the 60s/70s. Last year I did this for your family. This year I do it for mine.

I hope you can join me in helping others by making a donation. If you can make it to the party on Wednesday night that is great too.

Over the past 10 years of the AHA NYC Young Professionals, we have developed and reached amazing heights as one of the most prestigious young professional groups in Manhattan. Thank YOU for bringing our group to the next level of excellence.

In honor of the New Year, the 2014 Young Professionals Board of Directors has developed a new statement to shape our mission, vision and values as a group. Cheers to the future!

The numbers speak for themselves: we lose an American to heart diseases and stroke every 39 seconds. For young adults under the age of 40, our rates are rising. We'd like to change that.

We are young adults who want to make a difference by increasing awareness and education of cardiovascular dis-eases and stroke while having fun. We have been inspired to get involved, be it because our lives have been directly or indirectly affected by heart diseases and stroke, or be-cause we just want to be part of this active community.

We host regular missions events aimed at getting people learning, thinking, and talking about prevention strategies of a heart healthy lifestyle. We volunteer in the community, meet up for social and fitness events, learn more about heart diseases and stroke, share our stories, advocate for heart policy, support fundraising for cutting edge research, and have fun along the way.

We are vibrant and bold, changing the face of heart disease today, tomorrow. One day at a time.

We are the American Heart Association Young Professionals of NYC. We are the YPs.

Without your commitment to our mission, we would be unable to do the things that we do. Please help us continue to fight America’s number 1 and number 4 causes of death, Heart Disease and Stroke.
